Cemerlang, Gemilang dan Terbilang
Excellence, Glory and Distinction
- Many Malaysians will find this manifesto in the recent elections very
familiar.
Any club that meets with the purpose of the 'bringing out the
Excellence of the members" will indeed add
value to the members, the clubs, the areas, the divisions and ultimately the
District.
Being the best and bringing the best will help one achieve the "glory" of having beaten one's own record, not so much in beating others.
And this will add further to the distinction
of belonging to a top district in the world...and knowing that we
have given off the best and brought out the best in others.
What are you doing to bring out
"Cemerlang, Gemilang
dan Terbilang
Bring more guests to your clubs and help them
achieve "par excellence" in their lives.

Sharing by VPM, SRC Toastmasters Club - the Toast of the Padang, Anne Quek on how they recruited 20 new members. SRC Toastmasters Club has been awarded the Smedley Award. Since 1 July has recruited 20 new members. As Vice President for Membership, I recruited 13 members single handedly. I am proud to be a Toastmaster of the SRC Toastmasters Club. As a Toastmaster since January 2003, I observed and was motivated by the exemplary examples of the present and past dedicated leaders and the camaraderie of fellow Toastmasters. Fellow toastmasters are appreciative whenever we have new members and the new members are impressed. Seeing the new toastmasters learning, growing, and enjoying chapter meetings motivated me further. The Club Officers Training
provided the necessary education. The solemn vow made during Installation
Night was a committed role. Periodical emails
from the LGM serves as reminders and keeps us updated of the latest news. Recruitment should be ongoing at all times and not just qualify for the Smedley Award within a time frame only. In doing so, the Club's membership can maintain, sustain and grow, thus reaching the Club's achievements. Be
creative in your ideas, patient
and sincere when recruiting new members.
Do not be complacent. After recruiting, follow ups
are important. Be positive in handling feedback and improve wherever and
whenever possible.
Create awareness and advertise. Posters are put up at the club to
notify club's members of Toastmasters' forthcoming activities. The Executive Committee writes
articles in the Singapore Recreation Club's (SRC) magazine on Toastmasters'
successful achievements, e.g. Roll of Honour, Contest winners, Smedley
Awards, educational workshops, Christmas party etc. At SRC, whenever I am asked by
members about my club activities, I readily share
and tell about Toastmasters,. Be interested in people genuinely
and convince them with appropriate persuasion. Most importantly, let's remind ourselves that Every Member is a Charismatic Toastmaster Ambassador to help all who seek what Toastmasters can offer. Every Member can do it.. Look out
for testimonials from
Seagate Korat &
Brunei Speakers Club
in our next few issues on
their success with membership recruitment.

Dear Toastmasters,
Many organisations and members of the public would like to benefit from the Toastmasters program. Part of the mission of Toastmasters International is to extend the benefits of Toastmasters to ever greater numbers of people. We need people like you to let us know if you know of any organisation or company that is interested to form a Toastmasters Club? You can play a very important role by identifying them and our Marketing Team will be able to assist you and work with you. Please let us know. warm regards, Patrick Oei DTM

Dear Fellow Toastmasters
Greetings from
Atlanta, the
birthplace of Coca Cola & where
CNN HQ is, where the Toastmasters
International Convention will be held this year. This is my 2nd visit
to Atlanta, the last was 1-1/2 years ago for a business trip, and
co-incidentally my 2nd visit to the TI Convention.
TRAINING
The top district officers are now being
trained to prepare us for the challenges ahead. We've a full day of training and
tomorrow we'll have another day. The training is indeed rigorous and yet
interesting. Although we are so tired after almost 24 hours of traveling, we
know that we have TMs like you behind us in spirit.
The momentum is indeed very fast and
challenging. Many are impressed whenever they realized that we are from the No 1
district in the world….5 times winner… It is indeed a proud moment for us
whenever they say….Wow!..you are from District 51.
CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
The emphasis of training is to help us focus on the Critical Success Factors ...and that of Marketing ie to extend the benefits of Toastmasters…
Many of us used to think that we
already have too many clubs….in our country…but during the training, we realised
that actually we have not reached the pinnacle yet…for every 10,000 population
..we need a TM CLUB.
The numbers sound intriguing, isn't it?
Regional Speech Contest
On Tuesday, we look forward to the
Regional Speech Contest whereby Donald Yee from Hong Kong will represent
D51. The winner of the Regional Speech Contest will then proceed to the
World Championship of Public Speaking
during the convention next week. Last year, our own Ramesh from Singapore
emerged 2nd in the Regional contest.
ELECTIONS
At the same time, we are hoping that DTM Maimunah will be elected as an International Director for the overseas district. Do pray for her success..
THANK YOU
Thank you to those of you who have responded by saying that your club has already recruited in excess of the Smedley award and also to those of you who are expanding your horizons by conducting Speechcrafts. You are indeed an inspiration to all of us here. It is people like you who give us the moral courage and strength.
Have a great week ahead, Ping

" This email goes out to District Officers & CLUB OFFICERS "
Dear District & Club Officers,
It is now time to send out Notice for Membership Renewal to your members.
Your club needs to pay the Semi Annual Dues to TI BEFORE 1st Oct 2003
Please send out the Notice to the members to
Let us enjoy the process
of leadership.
Let us start early.
Let us not stress ourselves with
administrative headaches.
Every year, many clubs write to TI at or around 1st Oct to ask them to acknowledge receipt and TI has to reply to more than 8600 clubs. And they probably don't have the resources to do so.
If we prepare & submit the semi annual dues early, then we have a longer turn-around time to resolve any issue on credit card payments/bank drafts/Telegraphic Transfer or whatever problems that may arise. We will also have time to check the TI website to see if payment has gone through and the semi annual dues have been registered. But if we pay in late September, TI will take more than a week to update the website, & any problems sorted out later may end up in the dues being submitted late.
TI has a strict policy that deadlines are strictly adhered to to qualify for awards, no matter what good reasons we have, so in all cases, no waivers are given for DCP points.
Let us use our energies to concentrate on the members' needs - so it is also good that your club collects 1 year dues, if possible as the district will be coming up with an award for clubs that collects one year's dues (ie from Oct 03~Sep 04)
Let us continue to Expand our Horizons, as you embark on this journey on leadership looking after the diverse needs of the members. Whether we serve our members and enthuse them to get new members are all in your hands, because your Dreams are your possiblities.
In the meantime, go for the Smedley Award & enthuse your members to bring guests to your club meetings & make your meetings a memorable "Moment of Truth" for your guests and your members. I am very encouraged by the many responses to my recent email on the Smedley award from club leaders that their clubs have already signed up more than 10 members in the month of August alone.....

PS; Please note that I will be away from 14th Aug to 27th Aug for the TI convention with the other District Officers.

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,
Our late Founder Ralph Smedley, would like us to enthuse our members to extend
the benefits to our friends, colleagues, and associates.
In the months of August & September, any club that recruits at least 5 new
members,
and/or re-instated members,
would receive the Smedley's Award - a long ribbon to be pinned to your club
banner.
Go for it!
I have just returned from my visit to Medan, Indonesia, & I am so encouraged
by the response of the clubs, who have pledged to be President's Distinguished
Clubs this term. They set the goals themselves and are so committed and so
enthusiastic
about it. I am sure your club will set a goal for yourselves....and getting 8
new members should not be a problem. Indeed I am encouraged by the many clubs
leaders I met in Singapore and Malaysia too at their COTs/Installations that
8 members is only the base that they are going for,...many are aiming for more
than that figure as many recognised the fact that every year, we will have some
members not renewing....and that we need new blood to ensure club renewal and
club growth.
Besides getting new members, your club can help by contacting your old members
too & inviting them to join you for your meetings...again..and to return and
continue to benefit from Toastmasters. Go through your guests books and call
up your guests who did not join your club..and invite them again....
I am sure as leaders, we all recognise that we want the best for our clubs. Go
for the Smedley award. Go for excellence in club meetings.
Go and meet the members' needs. I know you can ...help expand our horizons ..in
leading, speaking and in serving.
Have a great week ahead.
