PERFORMER
DIPLOMA IN SPEECH & DRAMA
|
This is a one-year programme leading to a performer diploma in Speech and Drama. The programme is designed to provide a basic education in the different literary types or genres: fiction, poetry and drama. The ultimate goal is to enable participants to pick up any piece of literature and read, deliver or perform in a meaningful and skilled manner.
Those who do well in this course will be equipped to move on to the next level ?the teacher diploma in speech and drama (LLCM/TD). Hence the associate diploma is a crucial prerequisite for those intending to acquire a teaching credential later. Details for the performer associate diploma are as follows:
Module One: FictionWhat makes effective prose writing? This module will look at how authors develop their formulae for novels. Related issues of plot, character and setting will be dealt with. Other matters pertaining to theme, style, tone and perspectives, as well as use of irony, will be covered. Passages for reading practice will be provided. Students will have to purchase their own copies of the prescribed novel, the title of which will be confirmed at a later stage. Module Two: PoetryHow does one define poetry? The basic issues of rhythmic patterns and figures of speech will be explained. Diction, images, and forms will also be dealt with. According to the requirements of the syllabus, special attention will be given to poetry of the romantic period: Blake, Wordsworth and Coleridge.Module Three: DramaDrama is of course written to be performed rather than read. Hence reading drama, whether silently or aloud, requires some skill and focus. This unit will explore the origins of drama and the emergence of tragedy as a dramatic form. We will also trace the history of drama from Shakespeare to the modern era.Module Four: Examination Preparation
This segment of the programme will prepare the candidate for
both the theory or written paper, as well as the practical or
performance examination. The theory paper is a three-hour
written examination covering speech skills, performance
techniques, stage mechanics, and history of literature (18th
Century). The practical examination will involve a performance
of four set pieces, plus two sight-reading extracts.
