The Story behind New Millennium Advanced Toastmasters Club |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Why and how did it come about?
It's often difficult
for people who have achieved their CTM and ATM, to get a speaking slot
at their own Club - especially for the longer assignments.
It's also not easy
for Clubs to provide the 'extra' time crucial for an in depth evaluation
that an advanced speech really needs. That was the reason for setting up an advanced toastmasters club in Division D.
Back in 1997, PDG
Lilian Lau, DTM was the prime mover for the set-up of the club and she
quickly enlisted 20 charter members. The clubs objective was to further enhance the development experience. At New Millennium Advanced, we had strived to provide: -

Especially with the enthusiastic support and participation of stalwart members like David Chee, S K Shum, Peter Goh and the late Rose Nunis.
Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, without fail, at the Toa Payoh South CC Theatrette, the doors of the New Millennium were open to toastmasters who wanted to do advanced manuals topics. Toastmasters would attempt projects from interesting manuals like Speaking on Television and the popular Story-Telling manual.
The best part would be the fun and camaraderie that permeated the bi-monthly meetings. Besides regular meetings, New Millennium Advanced and its sister club Toa Payoh South CC were the venue of choice for Area D2 and division D speech contests. The theatrette could easily hold more than 150 toastmasters under one roof.
The New Millennium advanced TMC boasts numerous Division D Area Governors, Division Governors and even a District Governor in its alumni. A non- exhaustive list would include Lilian Lau, Susan Wong, Clifford Heng, Tay Yiang Ping, Michael Rodrigues, Lynn Desker, David Chee, James Seck, Ernest Chen, Shridar Narayanaswamy and Anthony Leong.
At the focus of NMA mission is to ensure that its members matter and ensuring the members enjoy their projects. That is why the advanced club strives to live up to Dr Ralph Smedley's words of wisdom “people learn most in moments of enjoyment.”
