District 80

On the subject of: I was called up to speak at the table-topics session at my club meeting two months back. The topic was “there is no final step”.
I could not stop thinking about the topic that evening. I have been in Toastmasters for close to fourteen years and as I progressed up the ladder in the development of my leadership and communication skills, I find that there is always more to learn.
For the first twelve years, I have never been able to present a project
without writing a script in full. Now, however, I am able to get by with
just the main points. And, I have also learnt that district leadership
can be quite different from club leadership.
Working with adults is different from working with school children; and,
even amongst adults, there are different leadership styles. I observe
and try to adopt the ones that work.
Which makes it such a pity when I remember the many friends I have who
joined the Toastmasters program and left before they could fully take
advantage of the benefits the program has to offer. Many left after
completing the basic manual. But Toastmasters has so much more to offer;
there is just no final step. Each step leads to the next, to further
growth and personal development.
There is no final step for my friend, Susan Wong, DTM. She graduated
with a degree in commerce majoring in marketing at the age of fifty.
Today, at fifty-four, she is attending a program leading toward
certification in leadership coaching.
“Everyday you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet, there
will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending,
ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the
journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and
glory of the climb”….Sir Winston Churchill Growth never stops; learning never stops, and the benefits we can receive from the Toastmasters program goes far beyond the basic communication and leadership program.
There is no final step.
