EVALUATION WORKSHOP:
OVERWHELMING TURNOUT!! |
23rd October 2004 |
The D80 Educatio & training Task Force has just conducted another resoundingly successful workshop. More than 280 persons (a record!) attended the workshop at the YMCA on Saturday 23 October afternoon. The workshop was part of D80's celebration of Toastmasters International Day.
The response to the workshop was overwhelming. Faced with the unhappy prospect of having to turn away many Toastmasters, the Task Force decided to restructure the programme so that we could accommodate everyone. As a result, because of the limited size of the auditorium, the Toastmasters got more up-close-and-personal than they had expected! Not a bad thing in itself, right?!
The response firmly proves one thing - that the desire to learn new skills and the pursuit of excellence remain strong in District 80. And it looks as if the E & T Task Force has hit on a winning formula in these new-concept workshops.
Written feedback indicates that a vast majority of the participants found the talk by Professor Low Ee Ling to be both entertaining and informative. Professor Low from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, gave numerous examples of Singapore English and pointed out the many instances when it varies from Standard British English. One interesting point she made was that standard Singaporean English (not Singlish!) is a variety in its own right, different from - but not necessarily "inferior" to - standard British English.
The Task Force members had the collective mission to highlight the key areas hat language evaluators could or should focus on: approaches, use of rhetorical devices or figurative language, delivery techniques, and common errors. In wrapping up the workshop, I suggested some novel approaches that could promote the collaboration between language evaluators and the clubs in "win-win ways" to add zest and excitement to meetings.
What's next?
On the cards is another key workshop. 26 February 2005, this one will focus on techniques in making great Manual Speeches. Its over-riding objective is this: to challenge you to make each Manual Speech a personal opportunity for excellence and a joy for all your listeners.
So, watch out for the announcement!!
