Monthly feature of Toastmasters in District 80 who are either a success story or has inspired others because
of membership in the organization
|
Michael Rodrigues DTM
Michael first joined Toastmasters in 1999 and the following year, he became the club’s President. Because she thinks he could be better off learning something more from the
organization, he was very thankful to his wife who was, actually, the one who signed him up to join. He found his calling in Toastmasters, so to speak, when he became an Area Governor followed by a Division Governor in 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 respectively.
As the District Secretary in 2004-2005, he founded the Toastmasters Prison Volunteers running on its 10th year now. In this light, he discovered that it is in serving and
giving that one can spread the effectiveness of Toastmasters. He also became the District Governor for term 2011-2012. He also asserts that, “more than the learning skills of public speaking and communication, Toastmasters build on the foundation of confidence
and commitment to your goals.” He further adds that, “It is the learning and sharing that is more valuable because our goals change but the values that we learn towards achieving these goals are with us throughout our life.”
Darren Tay Wen Jie ACG, ALB
Darren joined Punggol Toastmasters club in 2009 and has never looked back ever since. He describes the Toastmasters journey as fruitful, enriching and most happening. At age
20, Darren won the District 80 Evaluation speech contest 2009 held in Macau and became the youngest District champion in Toastmasters District 80 history then. Till date, Darren holds 7 District championship titles (4 in District 80 Evaluation Speech Contest;
2 in District 80 Table Topics Contest; and 1 In Mandarin International Speech contest).
As a bilingual speaker, Darren describes his accolades and achievements as not belonging to him alone. He attributes his success to the support and mentorship from family,
friends and fellow toastmasters. During his stint as club President and Area Governor, Darren gleaned valuable leadership and time management skills which he applied to his academic endeavors as a law student at the National University of Singapore. Toastmasters
also played a significant role in motivating Darren to pursue his public speaking aspirations. Darren is the best-selling author of "Express to Impress", and Founder & Master Trainer of the Public Speaking Academy.

Goh Sor Hoon DTM
Distinguished Toastmaster Goh Sor Hoon was preparing for retirement, searching for activities to occupy her free time and to connect with people. She found just what she was
looking for when she joined Toastmasters in October 2006.
From 2009 to 2015, Sor Hoon has served District 80 in a string of prominent appointments as Editor-in-Chief of the District Public Relations Officer Committee, Division Z
Treasurer, District 80 Secretary, Credentials Chair, Revitalized Education Program Ambassador and Organizing Chair for the “BiG” Annual Conference 2015. She was also District 97P's Secretary for their first District Executive Council meeting.
For her invaluable contribution, Sor Hoon was awarded Area Z4 Toastmaster of the Year 2010-2011 and District 80 Governor's Citation for Extraordinary Service and Dedication
2013-2014.
Sor Hoon is grateful for the exposure and support she has received from all Toastmasters she has worked with. She cherishes the leadership skills she has acquired. She believes
that only in Toastmasters everyone has a chance to practise and hone their leadership skills. Sor Hoon embodies the benefits of life long learning.
Liao Kehua ACG, ALB
Kehua joined Toastmasters in 2009. She was initially introduced to Toastmasters by her Supervisor then. She went to the meeting and was impressed by the speeches and the evaluations
that followed thereafter and joined the organization immediately. After a year of being a Toastmaster, she observed that her spoken and written English has improved tremendously. She was able to express herself more clearly and confidently and score a distinction
in her academic assignment; and explain in a concise and clear manner a more focused and targeted information to her patients and their families. It
also enabled her to lead research projects in her professional life as a nurse.
The main pillar of Singhealth Toastmasters Club, she had kept the club vibrant in recent years. She also lead Area Z4 to its President’s Distinguished Area finish as its Area
Governor in term 2014-2015. She also became Area Z4 International Speech Contest Champion 2011-2012. She will definitely recommend Toastmasters to anyone because of how it can transform someone, not only to be a better speaker, but a better leader too. Kehua
is an inspiration to her peers in District 80.
