From: District 80 Senior District Officers

District Director's Chinese New Year Message

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

Wishing you a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year! May you have happiness, good health and success all year round and that your life be free of worry and fear too!

At this point, I am pleased to update you District 80’s performance as follows:

Singapore (as of 2016-02-04)

Though 5 clubs have yet to pay the October dues, we are grateful to the three community clubs’ leaders for the commitment in ensuring that their clubs are in good standing before the next dues date of March 2016. As for the other two corporate clubs, despite the on-going restructuring of the company, we are still working with the management and hope that they will continue their respective Toastmasters clubs for the benefit of their employees.

In January, we, the District Trio, attended the Mid-Year Training in Auckland, New Zealand together with 10 other District Trios from Regions 12 & 14. We are thankful to Toastmasters International for the opportunity to learn and share with the other District leaders; it was another eye opener where we discussed our challenges in our roles as the District Senior Leaders. Our 7-minute presentation can be watched through the following link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBoHM_bmYRY

This term, I have the privilege to be invited in conducting the New Members Induction Ceremony for some clubs. These clubs are facing challenges in reaching their membership goals and yet, the clubs’ leaders are committed to deliver results before the end of the term. I salute their never say die spirit. I was also invited to be the General Evaluator at some clubs’ meeting and although these clubs are already healthy and strong, they carry the past year’s legacy to do well as they continue in working hard to achieve quality club meetings.

With all these club visits I conducted, one thing is for sure, we have fabulous club leaders who are always looking for improvement to better serve their members and to expand their club membership as well. With the District’s motto, I am convinced that our clubs will make District 80 proud by end of our term! Keep Up with your good work!

District 80, Make Members Matter

HONOUR ROLL

Monthly feature of Toastmasters in District 80 who are either a success story or has inspired others because of membership in the organization

JANUARY

Aziz Mustajab, DTM

Distinguished Toastmasters Aziz joined the organization in May 1992. And, as with most who signed up to become a member, two of the main reasons he cited are: to further develop his public speaking skills; and hone his effective listening and quick thinking abilities. Over time, aside from having achieved his goals, he observed that his membership has given him not only greater self-confidence but a much heightened stage presence as well. He reached the zenith of the leadership ladder at District 80 when he became the District Governor in 2010-2011. After his stint, he continued to be visible at district events and still held positions at various levels too. He said that he will definitely recommend membership to Toastmasters to anyone who aspires to be an effective public speaker because he or she can never find a better training ground to develop those skills than with this well-established, non-profit organization called Toastmasters International. He further asserts that the real awards and benefits he received from the group are worth their weight in gold and they are: be a life-long Toastmaster, be a life-long benefactor.

Carolyn Street-Johns, DTM

Distinguished Toastmaster Carolyn Street-Johns joined the movement in January 2011 initially to help her husband overcome his fear of speaking and reticence to express himself. Toastmasters also offers her opportunities to meet people and to explore Singapore. Carolyn had been out of Singapore for several years and her frequent “clubbing” round the island familiarises her with what were previously “parts unknown”. Carolyn has dyspraxia which makes organisation and planning massive challenges for her. This has not stopped her from serving various EXCO appointments in her home club, Fengshan TMC and contributing to the District in numerous appointments ranging from Area Governor 2012/2013, Division Governor 2013/2014 to Assistant Division Director – Club Growth 2015/2016. Through this process, she has gained tremendous confidence in time management, networking and leadership. She received the District Governor's Citation 2013/2014 for her invaluable contribution. A noteworthy tip from Carolyn, she heartily recommends others to join Toastmasters but ensure you join a club which has the right climate for you to grow in a way that suits you, at your own pace.

FEBRUARY

Wekie Tay, DTM

Distinguished Toastmaster Wekie Tay joined the movement in January 1997 when he was still studying in National University of Singapore. He had discovered, through participation in co-curricular activities, that quality communication is a cornerstone of effective leadership, interpersonal interaction and lifelong success. He served in various appointments at club, area, division and district levels – ranging from Club Mentor to being the first Division Z Governor to District Club Growth Chair. These appointments allowed him to exercise and apply his leadership skills as well as add value to his life. The process of rebuilding NUS Toastmasters Club from 3 active members to over 100 members and Telok Blangah Toastmasters Club from 4 active members to achieving “President’s Distinguished” status were highlighted as his most enriching and exciting experiences. Being a Toastmaster has benefitted him professionally and personally. He received District Governor’s Special Citation Award, TI World’s Top 5 Membership Campaign, Phoenix Award and more than 131 trophies from speech contests. He has also seen many real-life examples of friends who gained from the Toastmasters program and progressed well in their lives. With its practical and proven program, he recommends that “Toastmasters is not only useful, it’s essential!”

Helen Lee, DTM

Helen Lee, DTM joined toastmasters in 1989 because her boss back then said that her “English is terrible”. From then on, she has taken her Toastmasters journey to new heights and levels. She was transformed into someone who became comfortable in the presence of strangers. With communication and leadership skills developed through her membership, she considers the best part of her journey the Speechcraft she conducted years ago for the Prison Training School in Kaki Bukit and one of the attendees, Darren Tan, from being a prisoner, became a lawyer. And just last year, she designed a program for the Youth Development Program for the Boys of BOLA (Beacon of Life Academy) to improve the communication skills of the wayward boys of Taman Jurong Constituency. And after two decades in the organization, she has no plans of slowing down. She serves as VPE2 for both ISCA and Chua Chu Kang Mandarin TMC’s; Auditor for Division V; District 80 Alignment Chair; and an Ambassador for the Revitalised Education Progam. She is also the Club Coach for Nanyang Brasstacks and Mentor for Thermo-Fisher TMC’s. For her, the joy of Toastmasters is the journey, not the destination. Helen is truly an exceptional Toastmaster.
